Southern Cal had results by becoming a fantastic defensive team. USC held their foes to under 41% from the floor shooting and also to less than 64 points per game.

Bryon Wesley is a 6'5" freshman perimeter player who's anticipated to help around the offensive end immediately. Alexis Moore is one more freshman who ought to see time and plays very well on each side sides of the court. Junior college transfer Greg Allen is a solid defender and can shoot 3.
Frontcourt
The Trojans 3 post players ought to be Aaron Fuller, Dewayne Dedmon, and James Blascyk. Fuller was forced to sit out the 2010-11 year after transferring over from Iowa. In his sophomore season for the Hawkeyes he was honorable mention on the All-Big Ten team with 9.7 points and almost 7 boards every night.
These players will likely be pushed in practice by a couple of transfers who can't play this year. Ari Stewart and Eric Wise transferred from Wake Forest and UC-Irvine, respectively.

Treasure Blue Nike Hyperdunk Shoes For Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
I would really like to work for Nike. What sneakerhead wouldn't want to? Of course, the odds of securing a job position there are most likely the same odds of winning the lottery. I am really not asking for a lot though. I just want to be on the Nike design team that determines what the colorways they use on their basketball shoes will be. I am not asking to be a part of creating the innovative performance design elements that go into these shoes. I am not that bright. And I guess I am a little shallow as well. I absolutely judge a shoe by it's color. That's why I love Nike basketball shoes. The different colorways and design patterns that they drop their shoes in are light years ahead of any other shoe company. And it is not just the colors and patterns they create. It is the name they give to the colors they use.
It would be virtually impossible to list the entire list of epic colorways that Nike has used on their basketball shoes in the past few years alone. So I won't even try. What I will do is focus on the most recent gem of a colorway that the Nike Hyperdunk 2011 has released in. I would like to talk about three colors in particular. Treasure Blue. Ice. Volt. The official colorway description of the newest edition of the Hyperdunk reads Treasure Blue/Ice/Volt. Need I say more? No, but I will anyway. Nike has tweeked the colors of royal blue, grey and electric green to create a much "cooler" sounding color group. I have got to be a part of this color naming process in some shape or form.
Treasure Blue dominates this shoe and is used on the upper, midsole, tongue, laces, and outsole. Volt is featured on the inner lining and accents on the shoe's collar. An Ice Swoosh is used to complete the shoe. Epic colors used on an epic shoe. I want in!
The new Hyperdunk 2011 that possesses these epic colors is just one of many high performance basketball shoes that Nike has dropped in the last three years. Flywire technology is used on the upper of the shoe and provides lightweight support. The midsole of the shoe is made up of lightweight Phylon technology and allows for maximum impact protection. The outsole uses a solid herringbone rubber for the ultimate in traction control. Great looks in a high performance package. Enough said.
It's time to submit my resume to Nike again. It will be the third time I do that today. Somehow I don't think my odds of getting a job in the color design laboratory are any better.

I have been an avid sneakerhead for 40 years. From running shoes to my true passion, basketball shoes, I own more pairs of shoes than I can count. Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, and Reebok are dropping some pretty sick kicks right now. If you are like a sneakerhead like me, you truly can't wait for tomorrow when news of a new sneaker drop will be announced.

Nike Air Max Sweep Thru Shoes For Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
Are you a gamer? No, I don't ask if you are a fanactical video game player. I ask if you are an athlete who relishes competition? That kind of gamer. If you answered yes, I have another question for you. Do you consider Amar'e Stoudemire to be a gamer? If you again answered yes to this question, I will stop asking questions. Because my next one would have been to ask if you thought that your game was comparable to that of Stoudemire's. Chances are, your game isn't. That's cool. Very few people have the kind of game that Amar'e does. However, it doesn't mean you can't wear the same shoes that he does. Now, that's very cool.
The new Nike Air Max Sweep Thru is the most recent sneaker seen on the feet of Stoudemire. He has showcased them at the various NBA charity games that have taken place this offseason. And, now, you can showcase them on the court you rock. Three different colorways of this shoe have released and are perfect for you to display what kind of "gamer" you really are. These shoes are built for you.
The upper of the Nike Air Max Sweep Thru uses a premium leather upper that utilizes a midfoot strap system to create maximum lockdown to the foot. The cushioning system is second to none. It uses Nike Phylon in the midsole with a Max Air unit that is over-inflated for the ultimate in impact protection. A gamer like you needs a smooth ride, and this shoe delivers just that. The outsole features a solid rubber with a herringbone traction design. All of the lastest in innovative Nike technology is here.
The three colorways that have released in the this shoe are of a traditional variety. The first two are a Blackc/Neo Turquoise/Cool Grey/Neutral Grey and a Black/Grey. The third is a Cool Grey/Team Orange/Black. Very strong colorways for a very strong basketball shoe. A strong basketball shoe with an even stronger price point. That is, you don't have to have a strong pocketbook to cop a pair of these kicks. These high performance Nike shoes for basketball will only cost you $85.
The Nike Air Max Sweep Thru is another pair of basketball shoes by Nike that offers the highest in performance standards at a very affordable price. A shoe that is perfect for the gamer that truly relishes competition.

The New Lebron 9 Christmas Day
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
Will there be NBA basketball on Christmas Day? At the rate Commisioner David Stern is cancelling games there won't be. Let's hope the NBA owners and players association came come to their senses and reach an agreement that would end the current lockout. That way we can actually watch some professional basketball games. But more importantly, the lockout needs to end by the holidays so that we can see the annual sick colorway of the LeBron 9 Christmas Day. This shoe that LeBron rocks every year on Christmas has become as much of a tradition as the tree and presents beneath it. Images of this year's edition of LeBron's epic holiday shoe have been seen and this shoe definitely needs some face time on the NBA hardwood.
The most recent edition to the signature sneaker line that LeBron rocks may be the best Christmas Day version yet. This shoe is decked out in a predominately Metallic Red. The upper, tongue, and a section of the midsole all use this festive holiday color. Green is used on the speckled laces and heel pull tab. The Swoosh and LeBron branding are all done in White. A translucent icy outsole finishes off the newest LeBron Christmas Day shoe. This is the strongest colorway of this shoe has that has been dropped so far.
The new LeBron 9 is quickly establishing itself as the best all-around basketball shoe on the face of the planet. This new colorway along with the other colorways that have already been spotted make it the best looking pair of basketball kicks on the market. When you combine the best possible looks with the most innovate Nike performance designs you are going to have a masterpiece on your hands. After all, this is the first Nike basketball shoe to use both Hyperfuse and Flywire. The ultimate in durability, support, and breathability are what these two technologies provide the LeBron 9. In additon, a Nike Zoom unit is used in the forefoot as well as a Max Air 180 unit in the heel to provide maximum impact protection. This is the best pair of Nike shoes for basketball on the market.
With the holiday season right around the corner, you can add another basketball shoe to your already long list of epic, must have sneakers. In the past, Nike has released the Christmas Day edition of the signature LeBron shoe in limited amounts. This year will probably be no different. Regardless, you may want to put the new LeBron 9 Christmas Day at the top of your sneaker list.

The Most Popular Pair of Jordan Shoes for Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
Webster's Dictionary defines the word popular as, "commonly liked or approved." Jordan shoe fanatics would describe the Air Jordan the same way. Actually every single edition of the Air Jordan signature sneaker line can be described as popular. But when it come down to determining the most popular Jordan shoe ever made, there is a clear cut winner. The Jordan 11 stands head and shoulders above all of the other shoes that make up the most sought after line of basketball shoes in the history of sneakers.
The legendary Air Jordan 11 was first released during the 1995-96 NBA regular season. This shoe was the most famous and most popular model of the Air Jordan line.
The Jordan 11 was worn by Michael Jordan during this season. The season he came out of retirement for the first time. After attempting a career in professional baseball, Michael returned to the NBA and immediately became the dominating presence that he had been before he retired. He led the Bulls to their fourth NBA Finals Championship. He was named the Most Valuable Player for the NBA regular season, All-Star game, and NBA Finals. He averaged 30.4 points per game. He accomplished all of this wearing the epic Jordan 11.
Perhaps what makes the Jordan 11 so popular is the exceptional silhouette that was created in the design process. The man who was responsible for this superior silhouette was the legendary Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield. This shoe not only marked the return of Michael, it marked the return of Hatfield as well. Hatfield had designed the Air Jordan starting with the Jordan 3. Hatfield added patent leather to the upper of the shoe and placed a clear rubber sole on the outsole and the most popular Jordan shoe ever made was complete.
On December 23, 2011 the most popular colorway of the most popular Jordan shoe will make a triumphant return to the sneaker world. The Jordan 11 "Concord" is arguably the most popular version of the most epic shoe ever worn by MJ. This predominately White shoe with Black patent leather accents and a clear, translucent sole will be available for purchase and marks the third year in a row that a Jordan 11 Retro will release during the holiday season.
If there is still any doubt as to what is the most popular pair of Jordan shoes for basketball, keep this in mind. In 2000-2001 when the Jordan 11's were retroed in 15 different colorways, the highest quantity of any Jordan shoe sold out in the shortest amount of time. The upcoming Jordan 11 "Concord" will sell out within hours. This shoe is commonly liked and approved by sneakerheads. In other words, popular.

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Chris_Osterberg]Chris Osterberg
The basketball hoop that each team shoots in is 18 inches in diameter and is 10 feet high and is attached to a backboard which is usually made of glass. Every time a team shoots and makes the basketball in the hoop is called a field goal. A field goal can be either two points or three points. A two point field goal is made inside the three point arc line. The three point arc line varies in length. The different lengths are: the NBA arc radius is 23 feet 9 inches, the WNBA arc radius is 20 feet 6.25 inches, the FIBA arc radius is 22.1 feet, and the NCAA and high school arc radius is 20 feet 9 inches for men and 19 feet 9 inches for women. Any shot that is made behind those three point arcs are worth three points. The team that wins is the one who has the most points after the time runs out and if both teams are tied at the end then additional time is added for overtime. The game is consisted of four quarters. Depending on what level and league you play in is what determines how long each quarter is. The NBA has four 12 minute quarters.
The basketball is brought up the court by bouncing it on the ground, which is called dribbling, or it can be passed to teammates. It is a violation to walk with the ball without dribbling it. That is called traveling and the result of that is a turnover and the ball is given to the other team. Another violation is if you pick up the ball after dribbling it and then begin to dribble it again. This is called double dribbling and it results in a turn over. Physical contact to an opposing player is called a foul. If it is done while they are shooting it results in a free throw for that player. A free throw is an unguarded shot from 15 feet away from the hoop and is worth one point each. Fouls can happen on offense or defense. One example of an offensive foul is called a charge. That is when the player dribbling the ball is runs straight into the defender. An intense foul can result in a technical foul, which usually is caused by an unsportsmanlike conduct by either the player or coach. A technical foul results in a free throw for the opposing team.

3 Pairs of Jordan 14 Shoes for Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
This is a great time to be a Jordan shoe fanatic. It seems each new week brings news of a Jordan Retro release. These days all the news appears to be centered around the epic Jordan Retro 14. This shoe will always been remembered as the last shoe Michael Jordan wore as a Chicago Bull. The shoe he wore to win his sixth and final NBA Championship. However, there is much more to this shoe than the final game in which it was worn. This Jordan Retro was released in more colorways than any other shoe in Michael's signature sneaker line. And in the next few months Jordanheads will have the opportunity to cop three different colorways.
"Last Shot" - This colorway of the Jordan 14 is the most famous edition of them all. It was the shoe that MJ wore when he made the last shot he ever took in an NBA game. This shoe will release on December 17th, 2011. This shoe is predominately Black. The upper, midsole, tongue, inner lining, and outsole are all done in Black. A portion of the midsole as well as Jumpman logo and the number "23" are both done in Red and are placed at the heel.
"Light Graphite"- This colorway of the Jordan 14 is currently available for purchase. Light Graphite/Midnight Navy/White is the exact description that Jordan Brand uses on this colorway. The upper of the shoe features Light Graphite while Black is used on the midsole, tongue, and inner lining. The laces and outsole are done in a clean White. Midnight Navy takes care of the midsection of the shoe's midsole.
"White/Varsity Red/Black"-This colorway will release in early 2012. White is used on the upper and outsole to create one of the cleanest looks ever seen on a Jordan. Red comprises the midsole while Black is used on the midsole and the Jordan branding at the heel. This will be one of the most anticipated Jordan releases of the upcoming year.
All of the Jordan 14 releases will use a full-grain leather upper with EVA reinforcement for enhanced durability. Nike Phylon and an Air Sole are placed in the midsole and create the ultimate in cushioning. Maximum traction control is created by the solid rubber outsole that is used on the shoe.
Of all the Jordan shoes for basketball, the Jordan Retro 14 just may be the most historical. It was the shoe that was worn by Michael for all of one and a half games. The last shoe he wore before leaving the game of professional basketball for the second time. A retirement that came all too soon.

Too Many Colorways of Nike Shoes for Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
Too many pairs of Nike shoes for basketball? I can't believe I just said that. How can there possibly be too many colorways of the best made shoes for basketball? Actually, there is no way that Nike can make too many different colorways of their basketballs shoes. For myself and all other rabid sneaker fanatics, there has been no better time than now to be a sneakerhead. No time in the history of basketball shoes has provided sneakerheads with so many different options when purchasing a pair of kicks. That is a very good thing. Unless you are an obsessive-compulsive sneakerhead like me.
If you, like myself, are one of the hundreds of basketball shoe fanatics that suffers from OCD, you fully understand the conflicting feelings that are aroused by the daily sighting of a sick new sneaker drop. Literally everyday brings a new colorway in a Nike shoe for basketball. The hugely popular Hyperdunk 2011 had released in at least 30 different color versions the last time I counted. The Hyperfuse 2011 is not far behind in the amount of colorways in which it has released. Unless you count the Hyperfuse 2011 Low. In that case the Hyperfuse surpasses the Hyperdunk in amount of releases. And that is just two Nike models among several that they have to offer.
Here's the dilemma. On one hand I love having an endless amount of different pairs of basketball shoes to cop. On the other hand, the unlimited number of colorways that Nike produces ultimately translates into an enormous amount of money. An enormous amount of money I don't have. But perhaps I am just being unreasonable. Do I really play enough basketball to justify owning 100 pairs of shoes. Of course not, but my OCD just won't let me fully comprehend that fact. And besides, the basketball court is not the only place to rock a sick pair of basketball kicks.
It really was not that long ago that a new Nike basketball sneaker drop meant a sneakerhead only had a choice of a white or black colorway. All the new colors and designs on basketball shoes is a dream come true for this aging sneakerhead. In the past few years Nike shoes for basketball have released in some unimaginable editions. Snakeskin textures, 3D options, and a Digi-Camo pattern are just a few of the amazing designs we have seen used on a basketball shoe.
And I want them all! But I am also a realist. I am just going to have to settle with a few. That's quite alright, a new pair of Hyperdunk 2011's will do. For now.

Another Nike Hyperdunk Supreme Shoe For Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
They are at it again. Actually they never stopped. And if recent history is any indication, it doesn't look like they are going to stop any time soon. The "they" I refer to is of course the athletic shoe giant Nike. As a collective group the shoe designers at the company refuse to let a day go by without announcing the release of a new basketball shoe. Good for them! I am certainly not complaining, I am just trying to keep up with all the delicious shoes that they are dropping in the sneaker world. And I have no problem with doing so.
The newest sneaker masterpiece to come out of the Nike camp is another colorway of the Nike Hyperdunk Supreme 2011. So far this year with have seen Sport Red, Digi-Camo Gorge Green, Black, and Tonal Green colorways. The newest and most certainly not the last shoe, will use Team Orange. This color is featured on the shoe's upper, tongue, laces, inner lining, heel cage, and a portion of the midsole. Grey is used on the Swoosh and midsole. If you are a fan of the color orange, this is a must have shoe.
This is a Nike Hyperdunk Supreme so that means that a webbed TPU overlay will be used. As part of their "Premium Innovation", this toe overlay enhances support and comfort in an already technologically advanced basketball shoe. Flywire is featured on the uppper while a Zoom Air unit occupies the midsole. A solid herringbone rubber outsole completes one of the best basketball shoes that Nike's has to offer. Originally rocked by Kobe Bryant, the Hyperdunk has continued to improve in design and performance since it's inception in 2008.
With the addition of the new webbed TPU overlay, the Hyperdunk has continued to improve it's performance standards. A new, more breathable Flywire upper is used as a platform for the toe overlay. The webbed overlay locks the foot down and conforms to the foot to minimize any unnecessary movement inside the shoe. As a result, this just might be the most responsive and cushioned shoe that Nike has released this year.
Other than the Digi-Camo colorway of the Hyperdunk Supreme 2011, this is easily the best colorway to drop so far. But then again, I am a sucker for Orange. More importantly, I am a sucker for most of the colorways of Nike shoes for basektball. I can't wait for tomorrow.

Choosing The Best Basketball Shoes - How You Should Do It
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ted_Parry]Ted Parry
There are many different types of brands when it comes to basketball shoes and it can be hard to choose the best basketball shoes when there are a lot to choose from. Getting the right ones can be beneficial to your overall experience and your style of play. This post will underline what it takes to choose the best basketball shoes.
What Is Your Style Of Play?
All basketball players have different styles of play and this means that different types of basketball trainers are going to suit them. You're going to want a basketball shoe that suits your style of play by making you feel comfortable and confident when you're playing. There are three different types of playing styles.
Aggressive
Aggressive players focus on their build and strength to win the ball and help their team. This means they'll want a type of trainer that will protect them and ensure that they can move powerfully. Protection is important for these types of players due to the fact that they are going to be in many different situations where they will have a conflict with another player. Basketball trainers such as the Reebok Zig Slash do a great job in ensuring that your feet is protected with strong rubber and comfortable inside.
Speedy
The speedy player wants to use their pace and speed to get around the bigger players and provide opportunities for the team to score. Having this playing style means they're going to want basketball trainers that will benefit them by being lightweight and comfortable. A lightweight basketball shoe should help the speedy player by helping them move even faster and thus be better at what they're accustomed to. A basketball shoe like the Nike Air Max Turnaround can ensure players are getting the lightest run possible.
Runners
The runners are the centre of the team and the heart which keeps it functioning. Runners as you might have guessed have to do a lot of running and thus want basketball shoes that are going to keep them comfortable but as well as that provide plenty of breathability. The Adidas Adipure suits centre player runners because it makes good use of its air mesh and has many comfortable materials to keep you running safer and longer.
What Is Your Skill Level?
How you perceive basketball shoes and what you'll want from them will all be down to your style of play but also your skill level. If you're a new player and just want to get out there as soon as possible you're going to want to be looking at basketball shoes which are cheap but also provide you with the basic necessities.
Some Shoes like the Adidas Tip Off are a great example of this as they are cheap but also provide some great comfort while not being too heavy.
A medium skilled basketball player will have had experience at club level and will more than likely play every weekend for a local side. Players in this skill range tend to go for shoe types which ensure they're getting a bit more out of their playing style. The Reebok Pump Omni Lite is popular among club level basketball players.
Highly skilled players and also ones that are possibly playing at a high level such as semi-professional and professional want the best that the market offers. Doing so gives them the best advantage and chance to be seen as a good player. Some Adidas shoes such as the Adidas Adizero Rose is endorsed by professionals such as Derrick Rose and makes it appeal to the public at a much higher level.

The Most Popular Low Cut Shoes For Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
The low-cut, high performance basketball shoe is here to stay. There are more of these shoes on the market than ever before. Multiple editions and colorways of both Nike and Jordan Brand signature sneakers are widely available for purchase at all the major sports retailers. Ever since the Kobe IV burst onto the sneaker scene, there has been a major shift in the cut of basketball shoes that ballers have purchased. A shift from high and mid-cut shoes to that of the low-cut variety. And one of the most popular low-cut basketball shoes currently on the market is the Nike Hyperfuse 2011 Low.
There are plenty of very good reasons this shoe is so popular. One of the reasons is in the name of the shoe itself. Hyperfuse. This design material is the most innovative element that has been used on a basketball shoe in the last few years. Hyperfuse is a combination of three different materials fused together by intense heat. The Hyperfuse material creates the maximum in lightweight breathability and durability. This innovative Hyperfuse material is used on the upper of the shoe.
Another reason this shoe is so popular is the responsiveness that is created by it's traction control system. A solid rubber outsole with a herringbone traction pattern allows for quick, slashing cuts on the basketball court. Combined with it's lightweight and stable upper, the traction that this shoe provides is unparalleled in any other low-cut basketball shoe on the market. The solid rubber outsole is also responsible for the superior durablity that the Hyperfuse Low provides.
Many times a lightweight and durable basketball shoe will not be built with a high level of cushioning. That is not the case with this shoe. Both Nike Phylon and a Zoom unit are featured in the shoe's midsole and effectively create maximum impact protection. Another very good reason that this is the most popular low-cut shoe among serious ballers.
The Nike Zoom Hyperfuse 2011 Low is now available in a wide variety of colorways. Not only is this shoe technologically sound, it is one good looking shoe. A shoe that looks very good in more than one colorway. This shoe is truly one of the masterpieces that Nike shoes for basketball has made available for purchase. And has been the case with their other basketball shoes, you can bet on Nike dropping many more sick looking colorways on the Hyperfuse 2011 Low.

New Jordan Spiz'ike Shoes For Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
It is that time again. The time for all the Jordan Retro diehard fans to make themselves heard. Time to express their utter disgust about the news of a new Jordan Spiz'ike shoe release. Time to hear from these folks about the abomination that is a Jordan Hybrid. Just one of the Hybrid's that Jordan Brand regularly releases and is complete trash. A shoe that goes by the name of "Spiz'ike" and is a result of a lazy shoe design process. A shoe that is a result of taking legendary elements of the sacred Jordan 3,4,5,6,9, and 20's. A shoe these Retro fanatics insist should never have been created or released.
Well, despite the loud sounds of protest that emanate from this segment of the Jordan shoe community, a new Jordan Spiz'ike will indeed release. And the large segment of the Jordan shoe community that are huge fans of this shoe will be ecstatic. This is definitely a sick looking shoe. The colors that are going to be used on the new Spiz'ike are very similar to those that were used on the iconic Jordan XII "Bordeaux." This fact alone will cause some intense anger among the traditional Jordan Retro shoe fanatics.
Because of the color scheme that will be used on this shoe, it has already been dubbed the Jordan Spiz'ike "Bordeaux's." The upper of the shoe uses White and Dark Charcoal as it's primary colors. Of course the epic elephant print is also used on the upper and compliments these two colors nicely. Sapphire Blue is used on the inner lining and as accents on the midsole and lacing system. Varsity Red takes care of the laces and portions of the heel cup and outsole. Varsity Maize finishes off the colorway on the upper heel collar tab and Jumpman branding.
The news of the upcoming releases of the Jordan Spiz'ike "Orange" and "Blue" Knicks colorway pack along with this new "Bordeaux's" colorway will cause outrage among many in the Jordan shoe community. On the other hand, and on a much more positive note, there are going to be just as many Jordanheads that are overcome with joy. The hardcore Jordan shoe fanatics that actually look forward to a Jordan Spiz'ike release won't have to wait long. This new shoe will release in the early part of 2012. And it will release in spite of being one of the most hated Jordan shoes for basketball. Thank God for that.

How to Be Quicker in Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dick_Blanchard]Dick Blanchard
So you want to learn how to be quicker in basketball? In a game where speed and quickness dominates, the standout players are usually the ones that are most physically fit. The real results come from practice (we talking 'bout practice?), so when your coach tells you to do something, give it 100%.
A large portion of collegiate athletes underwent some sort of quickness training program, but for those that aren't as fortunate, here are a few drills to work with outside of practice.
1. Suicides: If you've played on any sports team, you have most likely done suicides before. This is a great conditioning drill for basketball because it involves several aspects already involved in the sport. When done right, suicides can help with explosiveness, foot work, endurance, and speed. To start, line up on the baseline, and explode towards the free throw line. As you approach, chop your feet to prepare for the turn, then explode back the opposite direction. Continue this by going to the half court line, then the opposite free throw line, and finally the opposite baseline. Recover for at least 90 seconds, then line back up and do it again!
2. Four cone drill: Similarly to suicides, the four cone drill focuses on explosiveness, footwork, and endurance. To start, set up four cones (or shoes, bags, etc..) in a 10x10 square. Next, choose a repeatable pattern to run within the cones, touching all four cones. Set a timer, and run that pattern for one minute, then rest for three minutes. When running this drill, be sure to focus on explosiveness, and be sure to chop your feet as you approach a turn. Your legs will get extremely heavy, but remember that the basketball player that can work through the pain will last longer come game time.
3. Mirror Shuffling: This drill requires a partner, but is excellent for footwork and man-defense ability. You start by pairing up with somebody of similar athleticism, and line up face to face. You will take turns as leader and follower. The leader will begin by shuffling in a direction, and the follower must mirror the motion as fast as possible. The objective is to remain directly in front of your partner the entire time by shuffling just as fast and changing direction just as fast.
These drills alone won't make you the next Kobe Bryant, but it is something to work on outside of practice to increase quickness. From my experience, the players that take initiative and work to improve their game outside of practice generally get much more playing time, and also see dramatic changes in athleticism.
Footwork, speed, quickness, and vertical leap all contribute to the athleticism of a basketball player. If you're an aspiring baller at any level, I'd recommend that you check out my other article where I talk about the program that I prescribe to all of my players. Nike Zoom Rookie LWP Shoes For Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
There are only two, count them, two professional basketball players in the history of the NBA to have a true signature shoe legacy. That is to say, two players that have had more of their signature shoes purchased after they have retired than when they were actually playing. The impact that these two players had on the shoe industry as well as the basketball court put them in a truly elite class. About as elite as you can get. We all know who one of these legendary players was. Of course I speak of the man, the myth, the legend that is Michael Jordan. But do we all know who the second player was. If you are a true sneakerhead you most certainly do know.
Penny Hardaway is of course the second player I speak of. Hardaway's signature sneaker line was and still is one of the most epic signature sneaker lines that Nike Basketball has ever released. Second only to the Jordan signature line of shoes. You just might be familiar with that line. The Nike Air Max Penny was the first signature sneaker that Penny laced up. Since then, multiple models have dropped under the Penny Hardaway signature sneaker line.
The newest Penny signature sneaker that Nike will release is the Zoom Rookie LWP. This new shoe will utilize an epic shoe design material that is synonymous with Penny.
Foamposite.
The Nike Foamposite One is one of the signature sneakers that Hardaway rocked in 1997. Foamposite technology uses polyurethane which allows the foot to mold to an individual's foot during the heat of play. This Foamposite, like Penny's signature sneaker line, continues to leave a lasting imprint on the sneaker world.
This new Penny signature shoe will use both a premium nubuck leather and Foamposite on it's upper to create a one of a kind look. In addition, unique outsole pods balance the look of this upper. Foamposite is featured on the toe and heel panels while the nubuck fills in the upper. All this sits atop a translucent color tinted outsole. Penny's legendary 1Cent logo is used on the tongue while the Swoosh is placed on the toe box. Several colorways are slated for release with the first one dropping the second week of November.
The new Nike Zoom Rookie LWP is headed for epic status. It will join a long list of Nike shoes for basketball that make up the legendary Penny Hardaway signature sneaker line. Penny himself is on a much shorter list. A list of two. And that's an extremely exclusive list.

Cool Grey Jordan Melo M8 Shoes For Basketball
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_S_Oberholser]Scott S Oberholser
There is a grey cloud hanging over the Big Apple. Actually, there is a grey cloud hanging over each and every city in the United States that has been blessed with an NBA franchise. The NBA lockout remains in full effect and the fact that games of professional basketball aren't anywhere near to taking place is enough to make any fan depressed. But the cloud that hangs over New York City is a different shade of grey than those that hover over other cities. This cloud is Cool Grey. And it represents the new colorway of the Jordan Melo M8. A new colorway of Carmelo Anthony's signature sneaker has dropped and it sports the most popular color in the basketball shoe business.
The new colorway of the Melo M8 uses plenty of Cool Grey in it's color scheme. The shoe's upper, midsole, and laces all feature this epic color. White is used on the outsole, Melo branding, and a portion of the midsole. Black occupies a portion of the heel cup and finishes off a very clean colorway of an already epic shoe. The colorway is definitely sick, but what about the performance design of the Melo M8?
There is nothing to worry about there, the performance design that this shoe was built with is second to none. Nike Flywire is used on a full-grain leather upper. Cushioning is bolstered by a Nike Phylon midsole that is complete with both Zoom Air and Air Max units. This shoe provides for the ultimate in impact protection. A solid rubber herringbone outsole finishes off the shoe and allows for superior traction control.
This new edition of the Melo M8 gives Carmelo another weapon in his signature sneaker arsenal. Playing along side Amar'e Stoudemire for another season will certainly provide more weaponry in the Knicks battle to win an NBA Finals Championship. Throw in Chauncy Billups and the Knicks have a legitimate shot to win the title. That is of course if there is a title to be had. If the lockout is not ended soon, there will be no war waged on any NBA hardcourt this season.
But there will be plenty of Melo signature sneakers to cop. This new colorway is one of the many that have already released. And it won't be the last. The Melo M8 is not holding out for more money. That's is the nice thing about Jordan shoes for basketball. Their services are always available, regardless of how much money is involved.

Boston College Basketball 2011-12 Projections and Preview
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jack_T_Jones]Jack T Jones
In 2010-11 Boston College had an overall record of 21-13 and 9-7 in ACC action. It was Steve Donahue's first year as head coach, but he will be starting from scratch this season since all of his starters are now gone. His junior star Reggie Jackson announced for the draft while his senior starters Joe Trapani, Corey Raji, Biko Paris, and Josh Southern all graduated. Jackson was the top scorer at 18.2 ppg and will be the most sorely missed.
Now, Boston College is considered the most inexperienced team in the ACC and could struggle to compete. With no veteran starters or players who have averaged more than 16 minutes per game, it will be difficult for the team to have much success this season. Donahue is building a team with freshman players and this class was not rated that highly by any recruiting service.
However, Donahue saw success creating an Ivy League power house in Cornell so he might be able to the same thing for Boston College. Donahue is known for choosing players who can work with his system though they may not be the most athletic. This is something we can look forward this season for Boston College. They may not have the most talent, but if they play hard and follow into what Donahue teaches the team could surprise a few people.
Backcourt
In Boston College's backcourt, we need to see how quickly the freshmen develop their games. Gabe Moton was the only freshman on scholarship last season but he was just scoring 2.5 points per game. He shot just 26% from behind the 3-point arc. He may be good at defending the basket but he needs to step up his offensive game. Danny Rubin is a sophomore who shoots well from the 3-point range with stats of 43%. Jordan Daniels is a former player who is a quick decision-maker while Lonnie Jackson is an excellent shooter but he needs to build up his body to be a great defender.
Frontcourt
In their frontcourt, a 7-foot freshman named Dennis Clifford had stats of 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 blocks per game during his senior year in high school. KC Caudill is an excellent half-court player but has difficulty running the court due to his weight being at 295 lbs. Ryan Anderson was a sought-after player by many recruiters because at 6'8", he can shoot from long range and plays smart. Eddie Odio, Ryan Kilcullen, and John Cain Carney are other players who might be seeing some time on the court for Boston College.

Baylor Basketball Projections and Preview for the 2011 Season
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Anthony_Moretti]Anthony Moretti
The Baylor Bears finished the 2010-11 season with an overall record of 18-13. Baylor missed the postseason for the first time since 2007, but should bounce back this year with a strong recruiting class. Though the Bears had a disappointing last season, Lace Darius Dunn become the school and the Big 12's all-time leading scorer. The Bears also have a record of 91-47 spanning the last four seasons which is the best mark the school has achieved since way back in 1945-1950.
Last season, Baylor played tough at home. In the Big 12, they had a 7-9 mark and were eliminated in the first round of the tournament when they lost to Oklahoma. With Dunn leading the way, Baylor put up 69.5 ppg while shooting 47% from the floor. However, the bad news for Baylor is that Dunn will not be returning this season. The Bears will miss the 19.5 ppg that he contributed.
Yet, Baylor Basketball still has an impressive roster which will make them a serious contender this season. The Bears will be hungry to end their conference championship drought that extends all the way back to the Southwest Conference in 1950.
Though Dunn is gone, Baylor still has Quincy Acy, Anthony Jones and Perry Jones III. These are three of the best and most athletic players in the conference. Due to this, Baylor is considered to be one of the top 16 teams in the early polls.
Baylor's backcourt is led by, A.J. Walton. Walton put up 7.9 ppg and 4.7 assists per game last season. Walton will be joined by freshman Deuce Bello, sophomore Gary Franklin, sophomore Brady Heslip and junior Pierre Jackson. Among the new players, Heslip is considered as the best outside shooter and he is now playing for the Canada's Senior Men's National Team. Jackson was the 2011 NJCAA Division I Player of the Year and could give immediate help.
Baylor's frontcourt is still led by the team's top three players, Quincy Acy, Anthony Jones and Perry Jones III. Newcomer Quincy Miller was a very highly touted recruit and should contribute right away. Miller is the second top 10 recruit for Baylor following Jones III. Returning forward Cory Jefferson is also expected to contribute to the team after seeing some action overseas in a couple of European tours. To fortify the frontcourt of Baylor Basketball, seniors Fred Ellis and J'mison Morgan will also be returning this season.

Missouri Basketball Preview and Projections for 2011
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jack_T_Jones]Jack T Jones
The Missouri Tigers had a 2010-11 overall record of 23-11 and 8-8 in the Big 12. However, this team will be going through plenty of changes this season with head coach Mike Anderson leaving the team at the end of the year. Anderson had given the school a record 77 wins over his past three seasons and reached the NCAA tournament all three years.
Missouri does have a pair of juniors they will be able to rely on during the coaching transition. Both are now part of the 1,000-point club. Marcus Denmon became a member of the first team All Big 12 team with his 50% shooting and ranking as a top player in terms of shooting, steals, and assists.
Missouri Basketball will be coming in this season with the loss of two players -Ricky Kreklow and Justin Safford. Neither player was a game-changer offensively so a big drop off is not expected for this season.
Frank Haith will be in his first year as head coach of the Tigers this season. He inherits a strong team with all of its five starters and top six scorers returning. This season is promising for them with Laurence Bowers, Marcus Denmon, Kim English and Steve Moore all back and all of them have made significant contributions the past few seasons.
The backcourt contains the most experience with almost all starters entering their senior year. Missouri is led by veterans Marcus Denmon and Kim English who are now both members of the 1,000-point scorers club. Denmon is seen to be the more efficient player with stats of 16.9 ppg on 50% shooting and has hit 45% from the 3-point area.
English is entering the season after posting double figures in points for two straight years. He shot a lowly 37% from the floor and but impressively matched that mark from behind the arc. In addition to that, he has also improved his assists to turnover ratio.
Another backcourt player returning this season is one of the quickest guards in Big 12, Michael Dixon. Dixon had a career high of 113 assists, and 10.3 ppg and 1.8 steals per game last year.
In the frontcourt, three key players and two newcomers are expected to see significant time. The frontcourt is led by Laurence Bowers and Ricardo Ratliffe, both are All-Big 12 selections from a year ago. Bowers is a very talented forward while Ratliffe was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. With a solid backcourt and a strong frontcourt, this can be a big year for Missouri Basketball.

What to Do When an Interview Is Squashed and You Still Need a Story
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Craig_Greenlee]Craig Greenlee
What do you do when a hard-to-get interview is cancelled and you're still expected to produce a story anyway? Having a panic attack wouldn't be all that unusual. But you still have to recover, and there's still a story that has to be written.
That was the situation for me several years ago when I was sports editor of UPSCALE Magazine. My Monday interview with basketball superstar Michael Jordan was called off at the last moment. The reason for Jordan being a no-show was understandable. Two days before our scheduled interview, MJ's father - James Jordan - was the victim of a road-side murder in North Carolina.
When the news broke, I knew immediately that the interview would not be rescheduled. It would be way past my deadline by the time Jordan would be available again.
At that point, I had a lot more questions than answers. Even though the interview was nixed, the story was still slotted for the magazine's front cover. I was in scramble mode.
Now I needed to do some extensive background research and figure out a way to be inventive in my approach. This was a little more labor intensive back in the early '90s than it is now. So, I launched my assault on the library stacks, sifting and sorting through mounds of magazines and newspapers.
What kind of information was I after? I looked for details in previously published stories that I could expand on. Since I didn't have Jordan to talk to, why not talk to others who are around him? Those "others" I'm referring to includes teammates, trainers, equipment managers, and even sports writers. They're not difficult to deal with, and in most cases, they're fairly accessible.
True enough, relying on these sources is not the same as speaking to the man himself. But keep in mind that they are viable in that they can readily supply useful tidbits that can help you write a compelling story.
That's why I talked to Mark Vancil, a veteran sports writer, who covered the Bulls during the Jordan era. Vancil collaborated with MJ on the autobiography Rare Air: Michael on Michael. During the course of our conversation, Vancil gave me a glimpse of the basketball megastar that few people ever see. This sequence was a good fit for UPSCALE's 1994 cover story that entitled "Flight 23 Has Landed."
One afternoon, the gym floor at the Bulls practice facility was empty except for three people - Michael Jordan and his two sons. Father and sons wrestle each other and eventually the two tykes stop wrestling and race against each other to retrieve the nearest basketball. Then they run back to MJ and make their requests. "Lift me up Daddy, I want to dunk it," the boys said.
I appreciated Vancil's input, but felt like there was still a missing element to this story. It needed to be something personal that would help me to convey Jordan's passion for a game that made him a multi-millionaire.
That's when I thought about an unexpected personal experience I had in watching Jordan play. For me, there's one sequence that really stands out. Below is an excerpt from the magazine's cover piece. The photographer mentioned in this narrative is yours truly:
After finishing off one of his outrageous dunks, Jordan's momentum causes him to collide with one of the court-side photographers. Jordan apologizes for the unscheduled landing, rubs the photographer's head like a crystal ball, gives a familiar wink, then struts back to play defense at the other end of the floor. It's clear for all to see that Jordan loves this game.
I would have felt a lot better about the Jordan story if it had included our interview. But I had no control over that. By digging for details and cultivating secondary sources of information, I was able to make the best of a less than desirable situation. In a perfect world, the story wasn't what I originally envisioned. But with some thoughtful planning, I was able to give readers a deeper sense of what it was that made Michael Jordan tick.

How to Be Quicker in Basketball - Four Cone Drill
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dick_Blanchard]Dick Blanchard
In basketball, there are a lot of things that you, as a player can't control. You can't control your genetics, which determine your height and size, which ultimately can determine which postion you will play. Fortunately, some key elements of your game can be controlled by you through basketball speed and quickness drills.
All superstar basketball players have something in common, and that is the ability to move efficiently throughout the given space on the court. Vertical leap is important, but having speed, agility, and quickness is essential to excel in basketball.
Although I would highly recommend committing to a legitimate basketball conditioning program (see below), the following drill, the four-cone drill, will help improve footwork, explosiveness, and agility.
Four-Cone Drill:
The four-cone drill is a highly specialized, yet very simple drill that helps players learn to explode quickly, then change direction on a dime. To start, grab four cones (or shoes, bags, etc..) and place them in a ten foot by ten foot square. Next, set a timer for one minute and prepare to begin.
In this drill, you will set up a pattern that you will run, touching all four cones, and sprint this pattern at full speed for one minute sets. For example, you may start by sprinting to the cone directly in front of you, then shuffle to the diagonal cone, then sprint to the next cone straight ahead, then shuffle back to the start. There are tons of variations to this drill, but remember to include straight sprints, shuffling, and backpeddling into this exercise, as these are all motions in an actual basketball game.
As a coach, I usually have my players do each pattern three times, with a three minute rest in between sets. I generally switch the pattern four times to include every motion in the game of basketball. One minute intervals may not seem like a long time from a spectators view, but I can assure you that your legs will be dead by the end of this.
Throughout the entirety of this drill, it is important to focus on the fundamentals that this exercise focuses on. As you approach each cone, consider how you will slow down, turn, and explode away in the most efficient way possible. Your legs will be extremely heavy, but keep in mind the importance of good footwork and fundamentals.
Like I said above, a basketball conditioning program is highly recommended, but for those who don't have the means to enroll in one, this four-cone drill is a great start. After a few weeks of doing this (maybe 2-3 times a week), you, your coach, and most importantly, your competition, will all notice a change in your athleticism.
Footwork, speed, quickness, and vertical leap all contribute to the athleticism of a basketball player. If you're an aspiring baller at any level, I'd recommend that you check out my other article where I talk about the program that I prescribe to all of my players. How to Be Quicker in Basketball - Suicides
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dick_Blanchard]Dick Blanchard
Learning how to be quicker in basketball is all about the time and effort you are willing to put forth. For some, speed and quickness come naturally, but for most of the world, it is something that takes practice and dedication. Genetically, Dwight Howard has an advantage over most other players, but that doesn't mean smaller players, like Derrick Rose, can't put up the same number of buckets as Howard.
Players at all levels can benefit by improving speed and quickness. For years, it was thought that agility was mainly based on genetics, and while genetics may still play a large part, quickness drills can drastically improve the agility of a basketball player.
As a coach, I always recommend that my players participate in an organized basketball conditioning program, but for those that can't afford one, here is a famous, but very helpful drill that we run at almost every practice.
Suicides: I can remember running suicides in almost every sport I've ever played, starting at a young age. These are applicable to every sport, and there are also variations that can specifically target the motions used in basketball.
For basic suicides, line up on the baseline and sprint to the closest free throw line, then turn and sprint back to the line. Immediately turn, and sprint to half court and back. Next, go to the far free throw line and back, then finish by sprinting to the far base line then back to the beginning baseline.
After completing that circuit, rest for about three minutes, then do it again! In one practice session, you will want to do this between three and five times.
Keep in Mind: This drill is designed to help you explode into a sprint, so as you approach each turn, quickly chop your feet, then turn and explode outwards. Those first few steps is what sets you apart from your opponent. Remember to stay low, and use your torso to propel your body as you turn.
Variations: To get a more customized workout for basketball, you can switch the motions to replicate what you would do on the court. For example, you may want to switch between shuffling, sprinting, and back peddling as you go. Shuffling is one of the main motions in basketball, so if you can target those muscles during this exercise, you will be that much better than your competition. This will also improve your footwork, which of course is very important.
As I previously stated, a legitimate basketball conditioning program will teach you how to be quicker in basketball, but this suicide drill and its variations will definitely help. Outside of practice, try going to the gym and doing this three times a week. After about two weeks, you, your coaches, and your opponents should all be able to see a difference in your athleticism and footwork.

Footwork, speed, quickness, and vertical leap all contribute to the athleticism of a basketball player. If you're an aspiring baller at any level, I'd recommend that you check out my other article where I talk about the program that I prescribe to all of my players. Syracuse Orange Basketball - Position By Position Preview: Center
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_N_McAllister]Michael N McAllister
Last year, the lack of production from the center position was masked by Rick Jackson spending so much time there. The bottom line is, Fab Melo was a big disappointment, and while Baye Mousa Keita showed promise, he was very limited offensively and struggled in conference play with his slim frame. This season, the Orange don't have Jackson to be a safety valve if the other two falter.
Fab Melo
Yes they were only exhibition games, and yes they were against vastly inferior competition. But there are things you can take away from those performances. Fab Melo looks like a completely different player than the one who could barely get up and down the court last year. He looks different than the player that seemed to commit three fouls in the first five minutes of every game, on his way to a stat line of 8 minutes, 2 points, 1 rebound, 4 fouls (or something similar to that). Coach Boeheim stated numerous times that Melo just wasn't in the proper condition to get up and down the court. However, Fab has come into this year thirty pounds lighter, and with renewed confidence. He just looks the part now. Up and down the court he goes without so much as an extra breath. He rotates in the zone, stands his ground, is physical without committing fouls, and dare I say it, is actually getting in decent rebounding position. His mid-range jumper is something Orange fans haven't seen from the center position since the days Elvir Ovcina. If he can be a consistent threat offensively, rebound well, stay out of foul trouble, and be a force inside in the zone, it takes this team to a completely different level. Yes he'll have games where he struggles. Everyone does. But I just love the look he has in his eye this year. It's one of determination, confidence, and knowledge of the system. Completely different from last year. Based on what I've seen so far, I expect a HUGE leap forward. That's not to say he's going to be an All-American or Big East 1st team. But an above average player who makes plays. He needs to be able to play 25 minutes or so per game. That will allow Keita and Christmas to split the other 15 minutes. If Fab doesn't play well or reverts back to being an enigma like last season, Syracuse can still be a good team. However, if he can be what we've seen in the exhibition games, Syracuse can be a championship team.
Baye Mousa Keita
We all know the book on Keita. He's tall, long, and athletic. He's good on the glass, and has a knack for block shots. Offensively he's limited. There were a few signs of improvement, like when he hit a baby hook in the first preseason game. That certainly raised some eyebrows. But given that he's the backup center, and likely won't be counted on to play 25-30 minutes most nights, the Orange don't need a ton of offensive production from him. They need him to come in, play well in the zone, hustle, block shots, and control the defensive boards. That would be huge for a team that has a plethora of offensive talent. Hopefully, he'll be better equipped to take the pounding the Big East season undoubtedly will bring, as he appeared to wear down some towards the end of last year. His slender frame is cause for some concern, but as long as he isn't needed for 30+ minutes per game, he should be fine for his role. And does it appear he's done a little bulking up, although not an enormous amount. He's just a slim guy, and that's OK as long as he's prepared for the beating.
Rakeem Christmas
When Boeheim decides to go small, Christmas will likely see some time in the middle. We saw that in the last preseason game against St. Rose. That lineup features him at center, with Joseph and Fair at the forward spots. That lineup is quicker and more athletic. It's a great asset to have when facing some smaller teams that the Orange normally face during the season. In this role, Christmas will be counted on to play a similar role as described with Keita above. Play defense, block shots, create turnovers, and control the glass. Allow the quicker, more athletic Orange to get out on the break and create easy transition opportunities. That's the name of the game here. Christmas' abilities suggest he could fill that role very nicely.
The Orange have depth at center, but it is very young and raw. Fab and Keita are your most experienced players there, and that can be scary. But the talent and potential is there. The leap from freshman year to sophomore year for big men can be gigantic in terms of development. It will need to be if they are to live up to the preseason hype.

What Are the Consequences of MLB Players Using Banned Substances and Fixed Play
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Beverley_A_Nowikow]Beverley A Nowikow
Player's being banned from MLB is a form of punishment that is instituted by the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball against an executive, manager or player and any other member associated with the league. This serves as a denunciation of an offensive action a player or member has committed that tarnished or violated the integrity of baseball.
A player or member that has been banned may no longer be employed with Major League Baseball or the MLB affiliated minor leagues, and includes being barred from the Baseball Hall of Fame. Since the Kennesaw Mountain Landis in 1920 was initiated as the first Commissioner of Baseball, MLB has recorded and maintained a list of people that have been permanently banned. Many people were banned prior to the establishment as well as many after the establishment of the Commissioner's office.
Any players or members found participating in any illegal activities on field and off, or violating their playing contract, or that cast the game in a bad light by making disparaging remarks, or making use of banned substances will be banned and have been banned. As early as the late 1800's fourteen MLB people were banned. Twelve were banned for attempting to fix games, one for violating the reserve clause and the other for making disparaging comments.
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball was established in 1920 in order to prevent players from corruption. However, due to the commissioner being given full authority, players were banned for minor offenses indiscriminately. In comparison to all the commissioner's successors, Landis in his twenty four years of rule banned more MLB people than all Landis's successors combined. In 1944 after Landis died, all the banned MLB people were reinstated accept one, Pete Rose.
Pete Rose committed multiple violations which included the MLB drug policy and the Mitchell Report findings resulted in a lifetime ban. Being banned from the MLB does not include the person from playing baseball leagues that are not associated with MLB. Depending on the circumstances players that have been banned, may make and appeal to the commissioner for reinstatement.
Until recently steroid testing was not a major issue in MLB history. It was only after the BALCO steroid scandal that MLB decided to penalize players using steroids. The policy was issued and accepted in 2005 by MLB owners and players. The policy states that:
1st offense - player is suspended for ten games
2nd offense - the player is suspended for thirty games
3rd offense - the player is suspended for sixty games
4th offense - the player is suspended for one year
5th offense - the penalty is decided upon the commissioner's discretion
Previously player's that tested positive for the first time in 2002 were sent for treatment, and these player's names were never disclosed. However, under the new MLB rules, any player testing positive for the first time is suspended for fifty games. Should they test positive the second time, they are suspended for one hundred games and testing positive for a third time, will result in a MLB lifetime suspension.
The use of steroids in baseball has significantly escalated over the past decade, and started around 1990, this period in known as the Steroid Era. However, the new MLB steroid policy brings the MLB in line with the NFL and international regulations. MLB Players that test positive for steroid usage are not only penalized but their names are now exposed to the public such as Gary Sheffield and Barry Bonds.
